Continue reading

Southern Turkey

View From Beach Ground At CanakkaleOnce we had decided to leave Istanbul we planned a quick route that took us down to Antalya on the south coast via Troy, Ephesus and Pamukkale. The first day of riding was pretty uneventful, even getting out of Istanbul didn’t seem to be too difficult, once outside of Istanbul we headed to Gallipoli without realising it which meant we never quite made it there, instead we crossed from Europe to Asia. Once across it was a quick dash to a small camp ground outside of Troy where we thought we were getting a real bargain, a relatively OK camping spot for only 2YTL, it wasn’t until the next day that we found out that the guy was really wanting 20 YTL which was way too much, so instead we gave him 8 YTL and left for Troy. Värvikirev Istanbul

Plaanisime olla kuskil nädal aega Istanbulis aga lõpuks veetsime seal kokku oma kolm nädalat, mille jooksul sõime me rohkem kebabe kui oma senise elu jooksul kokku, proovisime grillitud lambasoole võileiba (kõlab küll jubedalt aga maitseb imehea), nägime imeilusaid moseesid, kauplesime nii et võhm väljas, lasksime heal maista seebimaitselisel marmelaadi sarnasel türgi maiustusel (Turkish delight) ning vastasime küsimustele “Where are you from?” vähemalt 10 korda päevas! Irresistible Istanbul

Friendly Market ManOverall we ended up spending just about three weeks in Istanbul, the city where East meets West seemed to capture us and got us wrapped up in the buzz that seemed to flow through it. We arrived at the outskirts of the city at midnight on the 23rd of October on nothing more than fumes, honestly all the way along the road that we took from Bulgaria there were petrol stations every few miles but as soon as the little light started to flash on my bike telling me we needed more petrol the pumps disappeared, to say we were a little tense was a massive understatement. Over the next hour or so we rode around various parts of the city never quite knowing where we were, not even the city map that we ended up buying was any help so instead we decided we should ask for help from the local fuzz which led us to one of our first discoveries regarding Istanbul, there are a large number of police carrying guns and I don’t just mean little hand guns, the majority of them are all carrying semi-automatics I even saw a mini machine gun!
